If you detect a blind spot in the center of your vision, it’s important to see your eye doctor right away. First, he will run several tests to determine the degree to which your vision is affected. If your macular degeneration has not advanced significantly, your doctor may use laser therapy to repair the macula and reattach it to the retina. This will not eliminate the damage to your eye but will slow its progression. Laser therapy can also help to close the blood vessels that are leaking and therefore depriving the macula of blood.
Laser surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis in your ophthalmologist’s office, and you can go home the same day. Your vision may be slightly impaired after the procedure, and you’ll need to visit your ophthalmologist for close follow-up for about a month after surgery.
Even though laser surgery will help restore the central vision in many cases, it should not be considered a panacea, since the results are not always fully successful. When the macular degeneration cannot be treated with laser surgery, special prescription eyeglass lenses can help to restore some degree of central vision.
