Below are listed several precautionary rules that everyone should heed when travelling in the tropics.
1. Never eat raw meat. Even meat roasted on the outside but still rare inside should be rejected. The same warning applies to raw fish of any kind. In the Far East raw fish prepared by a process of fermentation is extremely tasty and prized by many as a delicacy. Nevertheless, however tempting it may be, it can be very dangerous and should not be consumed.
2. Do not eat raw vegetables. Salads of any kind must be totally eliminated from the diet when travelling in the tropics. If the vegetables are grown in the fenced garden of a friend where you can be sure they were raised under sanitary, safe conditions, you may perhaps take a chance. Vegetables may be washed in a solution of potassium permanganate, but this does not afford 100 per cent protection either.
