Of course as any man who has survived its rigours will admit, male-menopause is a fairly insulting term. Women in conversation laugh, and look quizzically at you if you own up to it. Surely you can’t have had it already, they say, their deduction being you can no longer get an erection. And at home or at work women commonly enjoy the title if they can use it in connection with husbands or work colleagues because to them it implies, somewhat comfortingly, that a man is vulnerable and sexually on the skids — possibly at a time when they suspect their own menopausal decline is on its way. At a dinner table the subject gives them opportunity to fire barbs at their spouses, barbs to take them down a peg in everyone’s estimation. A wife may be happier to accept the lack of sexual intercourse at home as being due to his menopause rather than face the possible fact that she no longer stimulates him sexually and offers him only, instead, companionship.
It is not unknown either for men to get mileage out of the title.
