Current studies suggest that women who get enough calcium may be able to avoid high blood pressure which is one of the most common complications of pregnancy. When hypertension develops during pregnancy it presents a serious risk of still-birth, but calcium can lower blood pressure in some pregnant women.
The Recommended Dietary Allowance of calcium for pregnant women is 1,200 milligrams, but according to the studies, most pregnant women get only about 75 percent of that recommendation. The studies also suggest that those who have high blood pressure may need twice that amount.
The research indicates that pregnant women should probably consume more calcium-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables, low-fat milk and low-fat yogurt. However, you should consult with your doctor before taking a calcium supplement or before consuming large amounts of any nutritional supplement.
