Finally, many men who have been castrated report that they don’t feel “normal”; they may also feel irritable and less aggressive. Weight gain, loss of muscle mass and subtle changes in physical appearance—differences in skin tone and hair growth—also are common. However, contrary to popular belief, there is no change in the pitch of the voice—nor, unfortunately, do balding men regrow a full head of hair. The long-term effects can include osteoporosis— loss of bone density, in which bones become thinner, more brittle and easier to break.
Who should not undergo this procedure? First of all, if you’re not prepared to accept the physical and psychological ramifications of castration, it’s not for you. Choose another form of treatment. Also, this procedure may not be best for men who are on anticoagulant medications that might cause excessive bleeding.
